PROGRAM

The six days of the conference are jam-packed. Participants often describe feeling a sense of vertigo at week’s end. The experience is designed to be sequential and fully immersive, so attendance is mandatory. Promptness and alterness are baseline expectations. There is a zero tolerance policy regarding drugs & alcohol on campus. In short, we expect conference participants to take the work as seriously as we do.

The exact itinerary for each conference changes from year to year, and is customized to the young artists in attendance as well as to the busy professionals we seek to engage. The best way to get a feel for the programming is to get to know our Past Presenters, and/or peruse a Conference Program from years’ past. If you have additional questions or would like to be put in touch with a conference alum to speak in more detail, contact us and we’d be happy to facilitate.

ACCOMODATION

The Artist as Citizen Conference will take place at The Juilliard School, 165 W. 65th Street, New York City, NY.

The conference will utilize multiple studio spaces on the Juilliard campus, located within the world-famous Lincoln Center complex. Attendees will also be led on excursions to nearby Central Park, and elsewhere in Manhattan, for site-specific engagements.

Participants will be housed at The Meredith Wilson Residence Hall, immediately adjacent to Juilliard, in The Samuel B. and David Rose Building, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza.

The Residence Hall contains four furnished housing suites per floor (approximately 1200 sq. feet each). Each suite consists of two single rooms, three double rooms, 2 1/2 baths and a large living room with bay window. Basic linens, including sheets and towels, will be provided.

MEALS

Meals will be provided by The Café at The Juilliard School, located in The Samuel B. and David Rose Building, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza.

Each participant will receive a meal card at Registration, to be used at his/her discretion throughout the conference. A bar code on the back of the meal card works with the cafeteria computer system to identify the participant as a meal plan member. Any additional snacks or beverages they might wish to purchase can be paid for with cash or credit card.

TRANSPORT

Though the majority of conference activities will take place within the studios at Juilliard, there will be some travelling within the boroughs that will be necessary – to go to the theater, for example, or an off-campus meal.

In order to facilitate this, ASTEP will provide each attendee with an MTA Metro Card. Group trips away from campus will be supervised by ASTEP staff members, and maps and directions will be on hand throughout if any assistance should be needed.

Travel to and from New York is not included in the participants’ fee.
